Natural Light In The Darkest Spaces

Tubular skylights are an effective way to illuminate rooms without windows, or spaces that don't receive much natural light.
This type of skylight is especially popular in classical and heritage buildings, which were not purposely designed to maximise dispersion of natural light. Modern buildings can also benefit from tube skylights to brighten up enclosed areas like walk-in robes or pantries.

How Does a Tubular Skylight Work?

Tubular skylights are so effective because of their simple design:
Sunlight is captured through a glass port in the roof, and then distributed to the target area through a highly reflective tube. This tube can be rigid or flexible, depending on the presence of obstacles between the roof port and the room below.
A significant advantage of tubular skylights is that they are easy to install without any structural modification to the building:
Roof Frame
: the reflective tube is installed between existing roof trusses and framing, without modifying the roof's internal structure.
Interior Ceiling
: the inside diffuser is installed like a normal light fixture, without needing the construction of a shaft.

Choosing The Right Tubular Skylight

Illuminate your space with Roofrite's selection of premium tubular skylights. We can help you choose the ideal skylight to suit your room and budget.

VELUX SUN TUNNEL

Corrugated polycarbonate roofing is made from a single layer of material. The wave-like shape improves the sheet's stiffness and allows water to drain quickly in the right direction.

SOLATUBE SKYLIGHT

Double-walled polycarbonate roofing provides more structural rigidity over standard corrugated sheets. The air gap between the walls makes twin-wall the ideal starting point if the area beneath the roof requires thermal insulation.

SKYSPAN SUNPIPE

Double-walled polycarbonate roofing provides more structural rigidity over standard corrugated sheets. The air gap between the walls makes twin-wall the ideal starting point if the area beneath the roof requires thermal insulation.

Frequently Asked Tubular Skylight Questions

Ask a question about Tubular Skylights

What are the components of a tubular skylight?

A typical tubular skylight consists of three main components: a rooftop dome to capture daylight, a reflective tube to transfer the light, and an interior diffuser installed inside the home

Can tubular skylights be installed on any type of roof?

Tubular skylights can be installed on virtually any roof type and slope, including pitched roofs, flat roofs, and curb mounts. They can accommodate various roofing materials such as composite shingles and clay tiles.

How long does it take to install a tubular skylight?

A typical tubular skylight installation can be completed in about 2 to 4 hours by a professional instaler.

Will a tubular skylight create heat in the room?

Tubular skylights can create small amounts of additional heat, and some manufacturers minimise this effect by using materials or coatings that minimise transmission of infrared light as heat.

Can tubular skylights be installed in any room?

Tubular skylights are versatile and can be installed in most rooms, depending on the roof height and the distance of the room from available roof space.
The maximum tube length for Velux Sun Tunnels is 6m, and up to 9m for Solatube. Total length may decrease if the tubes have to routed around obstacles.
