Roofrite recently completed a project that involved replacing the shadecloth on a pergola in Glen Waverley with Twinwall polycarbonate.

The shadecloth had been in place for some time and, as can be seen from the image below, mould had begun to form on top of the shadecloth, further detracting from the pergola’s appearance.

The timber structure supporting the shadecloth was also showing signs of deterioration, in all likelihood due to the shadecloth remaining damp for lengthy periods following seasonal rains.

Roofrite quoted to supply and install 9m2 of Sunlite Twinwall Polycarbonate to replace the shadecloth, virtually rebuild the timber supporting structure and install 4m of concealed guttering.

Supply and installation of the Sunlite Twinwall Polycarbonate product for a project of this size would usually fall in the vicinity of approximately $2,300 – $2,500 inc GST.

The client is thrilled with the result, particularly as the pergola space is now useable no matter what the weather; a benefit not available with shadecloth covered spaces.

There are of course other benefits of using Sunlite Twinwall Polycarbonate. It offers excellent light transmission – much better than shadecloth! It is extremely lightweight yet is impact resistant (250 times that of glass). The fact that it is weather and UV resistant and blocks virtually all UV radiation, 99.9%, adds to its suitability for pergolas. The product also provides superior thermal insulation which means it won’t get particularly hot when you’re sitting under it.

After spending ages sifting through reviews online as well as listing the job on a website, I finally found a decent business to replace rusted box guttering as well as repair a separate roof leak next to the Air conditioning unit. When it rained hard enough, water would pour into the ceiling and exit through the downlights. After dealing with some of the "cowboys"out there, (some even had good reviews), my opinion has been that if they can come around at short notice and want cash with no paperwork, then avoid at all costs. Finally the office sent me photos taken of the job and a VBA certificate. I can definitely recommend these people who were very professional and friendly. I no longer need to race for the buckets when there is a downpour! Update I was waiting for a really bad storm to hit before doing a follow up review to my original August 2022 post above. Just wanted to provide some feedback -; From the outset I felt great confidence with Kym, he certainly knows his stuff and made me feel assured that what we wanted could be achieved and actually delivered. It wasn’t as simple as putting on the cladding but we had various issues with leakage and the lack of water proofing by the correct placement of flashing's etc. Then the day finally came were the boys showed up to do the job.
