Types of Polycarbonate Roofing

Polycarbonate roofing comes in many different forms, but the following three types are most commonly installed in Melbourne:

Corrugated Polycarbonate Roof Sheets

Corrugated polycarbonate roofing is made from a single layer of material. The wave-like shape improves the sheet's stiffness and allows water to drain quickly in the right direction.

Twinwall Polycarbonate Roof Sheets

Double-walled polycarbonate roofing provides more structural rigidity over standard corrugated sheets. The air gap between the walls makes twin-wall the ideal starting point if the area beneath the roof requires thermal insulation.

Multiwall Polycarbonate Roof Sheets

Double-walled polycarbonate roofing provides more structural rigidity over standard corrugated sheets. The air gap between the walls makes twin-wall the ideal starting point if the area beneath the roof requires thermal insulation.

Frequently Asked Polycarbonate Roofing Questions

Ask a question about Polycarbonate Roofing

Why is Polycarbonate Roofing So Popular?

Polycarbonate roofing is popular due to its numerous benefits, including being lightweight, easy to install, highly durable (2500% more impact-resistant than glass), scratch-resistant, and fire-resistant. It also distributes light without overheating the interior, filters UV rays, and is simple to maintain.

What Are the Different Thicknesses and Profiles Available?

Polycarbonate sheets come in various thicknesses (0.8mm, 10mm, 16mm, 25mm, 35mm) and profiles (corrugated, greca, Trimdek). The choice depends on the weather conditions, light transmission needs, and the specific application (e.g., twinwall sheets let in approximately 80% of natural light, while multi-wall sheets let in about 60%)

Can Polycarbonate Sheets Be Used for Walls?

Yes, polycarbonate sheets are an excellent option for both interior and exterior walls due to their energy efficiency, insulation properties, and aesthetic appeal. They are suitable for various projects, including domestic, commercial, and industrial applications.

What are the most popular uses of polycarbonate roofing?

Residential and Outdoor Living Areas: Polycarbonate roofing is commonly used for patios, pergolas, verandas, and carports. It provides a bright and airy space while offering protection from the elements. It is also popular for deck roofing, outdoor awnings, and sunroom roofing due to its UV-blocking capabilities and affordability.
Greenhouses and Pool Enclosures: Polycarbonate sheets are ideal for greenhouses because they allow high light transmission, diffuse light to prevent hot spots, and provide excellent thermal insulation. They are also used for pool enclosures, offering protection from the sun, wind, and rain while maintaining a clear view.
Skylights and Architectural Glazing: Polycarbonate sheets are used in skylights and sidelights to bring natural light into buildings, providing up to 90% light transmission while blocking harmful UV rays.
Commercial and Industrial Applications: Polycarbonate roofing is used in commercial and industrial settings for roofing and glazing needs, such as covered walkways, conservatories, and industrial roofing.
Sporting Facilities and Public Areas: Polycarbonate is used in sports stadiums for glazing and safety barriers due to its high impact resistance and durability.
Weather-Resistant Applications: Polycarbonate roofing is preferred in areas prone to extreme weather conditions such as hail, rain, snow, and heat due to its superior weather resistance and impact strength.

What Are the Key Steps for Installing Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets?

1. Preparation: The roof pitch must be at least 5° (88mm rise per metre) for adequate water drainage. Ventilation must be ensured to minimize heat build-up and condensation. Appropriate purlin/batten spacings must be used, noise stop tape and eave infill strips installed as needed.
2. Fixing the Sheets: The sheets are secured to the purlins using the correct fixing pattern (e.g., every second or third corrugation). Overlaps must be correct (150mm for steep pitch, 200mm for shallow pitch).
3. Cappings and Flashings: Barge capping, ridge capping, and flashing must be used to ensure a weather-tight installation.
